For those of you with both small and large dogs living in one household?

I'm rescuing a 1.5 pound Chihuahua in the new few months. I already have a 60-70 pound female who loves playing extremely rough with other dogs. Naturally, allowing my 60-70 pound dog to play with the Chihuahua is really just out of the question.
I was wondering how those of you with both tiny and large dogs manage your time between dogs and how you make sure your larger dog doesn't accidentally hurt the smaller one.
Any advice, personal experience, etc. is more than welcome.

Actually, large dogs usually do just fine playing with smaller dogs. Dog packs usually have puppies around so adults have to know how to be gentle with them. Dogs play rougher with larger dog because they can, but wll instinctively play more gentle with a smaller dog.
Let them play together, but just supervise them at first.
My big dogs play with small dogs and puppies all the time and not once has one been hurt.
well i have a 130 pound rott a a doxen thats about 8 pounds my rott is scared of the little dog actually most are, but introduce them like in your yard before you bring it inside where your bigger dog feels it might be coming into thier territory use common ground and start out w/ them together for a little and extend the peorid of time just make sure u watch them the first couple of weeks to make sure they're ok together and also when they are eating because if one tries to eat out of the other ones bowl you could have problems possibly feed in seperate rooms. Best of luck!
I have a 40 # lab mix, and a 5 # Pom, they play together and chase each other in the house all the time. The lab gets down on her belly and they play bite each other alot. She is acually pretty good with the little one. i kinda think they know they are bigger so they are more gentle
I have a one year old German sheprherd that is 150lbs and a pup that is a Chihuahua and Dioxin mix. She weighs 5lbs. They play so much and our German shepherd will put our Chihuahua and Dioxin mix head in his month if she keeps biting his ear. He doesn't bite down but after a couple secs he lets go. They play good together but if the gs barks i have to pick up the small dog so she can look out the window to see what the gs is barking at
I watch them playing together and if she gets too rough with the little one, I make them stop.
