Guess the breed. What breed am i ? Can you guess me ?
Some individuals are reportedly able to leap six or more feet into the air. I am a very muscular, sturdy dog with a large, powerful head and jaws. He is very strong, but agile and light on his feet. The chest is wide and the muscular neck tapers from shoulders to head. The neck may have a slight dewlap. The head is square and broad with muscular cheeks and a furrow between the rounded eyes. The strong muzzle is shaped like a box. I am a brave and determined, but not hostile dog. Alert and self-confident, this breed genuinely loves children. It is known for its acts of heroism towards its master. These dogs have fought wild dogs, bulls and even fire. It is said "fighting off one of these dogs is like fighting an animal that possesses an alligator's head and a python's body." Yet when called off by their handler, they immediately obey. I need a good guard dog who is loyal but fearsome to others i was thinking about a Rottweiler or Doberman, what do you think?

If you train a miniature (not a toy) poodle to be the look out dog of your pack he can be very tenacious when needed. If you are looking for status type guard dogs such as Dobi's, Rots, Germans, Pits, ect then by all means by a status dog but to make sure you have him professionally trained and teach him to know the difference between friend or potential foe. Great Danes are not agressive to a point. They are intimidating though and can hold back any attacker just by growling and they usually are great companions and are very intelligent. Irish Wolf hounds are very popular for guard dogs but are a little hard headed when there is a commotion such as a struggle between you and your potential assailant and usually are tunnel visioned to protect you. Very strong and very gentle to everyone. Just remember, Guard dogs are trained to guard it is not truely bred into them. You teach the dog where his place and position is with in your "pack" and that you are the alfa dog of the "pack" family. I would definately get an Irish Wolfhound because they are really the silent guard dog - in other words you won't hear or see him coming until he's already there. And always remember they are still your pet and need love and attention constantly and to be treated as one of the pack so to speak not just a junk yard dog.

Both of the breeds you mention have naturally protective natures, so while I wouldnt count on it 100% to protect you, you can rest assured he'll at least give you a warning and if he knows youre being hurt he'll probably intervene (or decide its a game and get involed in the play).
(My rottie/lab's natural way to play until we trained it out of him was to grab your wrist in his mouth and yank as hard as he could--at 6 months old now Id worry about him seriously hurting me if he hadnt already stopped this. Ive still seen him try it when he gets scared or startled, so I figure he could still hold his own against a person if need be)

I keep both inside majority of the time, but make sure I bring them outside quite alot to play and run around. They both look somewhat fearsome to other people. I know for a fact that people with no dog experience or have had dogs, will ever come up and try to pet my dogs. But I also know they would NEVER bite anyone. They really could be the biggest babies, but boy when they bark, you might shitt your pants. I would recommend a Boxer with the brindle coat (brown/black tiger stripes) or a white American Bulldog. Really gorgeous dogs if you take care of them. A Rott would still be okay, but they do get pretty damn big, as do Dobermans. Just please take care of your dog, and remember that if you try to "train" it to be a guard dog, it might feel that everyone coming into the house/fence is an enemy.

They are one of the most intelligent breeds and are very very loyal and protective of what they see as there family. They are fearless but not hostile. German shepards are one of the most best watch dogs you can find, you are only considering the size of the dog and are you wanting to scare people off? Just get an animal you will love and not use it for your security systems. Get an alarm.

German shepards are one of the most best watch dogs you can find, you are only considering the size of the dog and are you wanting to scare people off? Just get an animal you will love and not use it for your security systems. Get an alarm.

When it growls, nip it on the back of the heck with your thumb and forefinger, and hiss at it. Not enough to hurt, but enough to get its attention. This is what senior dogs in a pack do to indicte to a junior dog in a pack that its behavior is unacceptable. And, since it's your dog, you are its pack leader.
When you do this, your dog should immediately go into a calm submissive state. The dog should lower its head, drop its ears (if they were erect), and look up at you sheepishly. If you don't get this reaction, nip and hiss again. When you get the calm submissive reaction you're trying for, pet the dog and praise it.
What you'll find is that the dog will eventually just respond to the hissing without the nip. And, it will probably learn eventually that growling is an inappropriate behavior and will stop doing it.
When is he growling ? when he has a toy .. when he's eatting ..

Growing worried...?
My 9mo. old baby girl is in heat, this is her second week (or so). I noticed she is MASSIVELY SWOLLEN...it kinda hangs when she walks, and resembles being a boy instead of a girl. I had another female that was in heat and she got swollen and red, but no where near this. Should I be worried? It looks like it's about to fall out, and it's kinda worrying me. She doesn't appear to be in any pain at all, but I was just curious if this was normal. I'm waiting for this heat to pass so I can spay her, so we won't be worrying about this again. Thanks all.

If you aren't sure then you need to take her to the vet. And for God's sake..WHY did you wait so long? She should have been spayed months ago...

I have a 3 pound Lhasa puppy. I want to get just trim and clean up possibly once a month. I would rather go to groomingdales because the dogs get more personal attention and I think it's a better experience, however I don't want it to cost as much as it would be for me to get my hair done. Petsmart grooms small puppies for $14 about how comprable is something similar at Groomingdales. Anyone know?

I have a 4.2 lb Yorkie male and I live in North Alabama.. about how much should it cost for a bath and teeth brushing?? Also how often do you take a puppy to the groomer? I want to start him early so he isnt scared.

Grooming scissors advice.. pet groomers only please.?
I am a professional pet groomer and own quite a few pairs of grooming scissors but decided it was time to add to my equipment. I wondered if anyone had any brand or scissor advice? There seems to be hundreds and hundreds of pairs of scissors to choice from these days and it is hard to tell without looking and actually feeling them. Any help would be much apreciated.

These are the Galgos greyhounds. In the US, we have rescue groups that raise money to bring them here to find homes. But unfortunately, they can only save so many. The question I placed yesterday was phrased poorly. My question is one of pure curiosity. I DO NOT HUNT ANYTHING, INCLUDING COYOTES, rabbits, squirrels, ankle biters, skunks, gold fish, etc. Again - pure curiosity, how do the ranchers get the Greys to return as easily as I have been told? SPARE ME ANY LONG WINDED ACCUSATIONS AS TO MY STUPIDITY - I have owned many Greys %26 Whippets. When not in my large, well enclosed yard, they are on a LEASH! I love my Greys; they are a part of my family, have thier own beds, as they are in at night. For those of you who "know it all" - look up Spanish Greyhound hunting. To the woman who wrote a very nasty response, you truly are a fool to attack a person without knowing any of the facts. AGAIN, THIS IS JUST A CURIOSITY QUESTION.

Greyhounds and Afghans are very similar. It's called Really Reliable Recall. I highly recommend you get this DVD. (There's also a book, which is cheaper, but I've never read. I'd imagine it's just as good.)
I'm also interested in the training methods of people who use their dogs for their traditional tasks. Probably this isn't the best place to ask about coursing coyotes though :-) There's too many different kinds of people here, and I doubt there's too many ranchers. I'd suspect that those ranchers have such a wide expanse of land that they don't need to worry about their hounds being hit by cars. They probably have horses and just let their dogs run until they're exhausted when they'll come back on their own.
When I went to a lure coursing trial, it was never difficult to catch the dogs (all off-lead) after their run. I think occasionally a dog will want to keep hunting, in which case all spectators and participants round the dogs up, but it's not generally a problem.
So what's the question today??
I have sighthounds, but the only experience I have in off leash work is with one particular dog. So, I'm not really qualified to answer this question. Your best bet would be contacting other sighthound, lurcher and longdog owners who hunt. I knew of some a few years or so back, but I've since lost contact. BTW, there's nothing wrong with a dog doing what's it's bred to do...within reason. Good luck.

Greyhound/lab mix dog frustrating me?
Ok I have an almost 1 year old greyhound lab mix dog. He has a nice backyard that he can run around in and another dog to keep him busy. But I come home from work to find he has dug 3 holes in my backyard and my sandles chewed up. We often put him on a lead but he still digs. He has balls, rope and a bone to chew on. I need help. any suggestions?

I would get a chain link kennel for him so he doesn't destroy the yard or eat something that will kill him, like a eye loop from a shoe. They sell some nice kennels online at SamsClub.com 5x5 with an available sunshade sold separately will cost about 200 with shipping, but hey, that is alot less than surgery to remove a foreign object from his stomach. He is still a puppy and will continue to do this to amuse himself, crates and kennels are to keep your dogs safe while you are not there to supervise, not to jail them if anyone is thinking that...
It's sounds as though he's bored and frustrated. Digging is a natural dog activity and so is chewing and he's still just a pup, so this is pretty normal behavior.
There's a saying that 'a tired puppy is a good puppy', and it's very true! A biggish dog with the mixture of breeds you have, especially when a puppy or adolescent, needs regular, vigorous exercise. Generally dogs don't play much by themselves (even if there are two or more, as it's not that much fun!) even though when they have toys. A long, brisk walk or a run in the park and a game of frisbee or fetch will work wonders.
He may also be missing human company if he spends a lot of time outdoors with just another canine companion. Even an hour spent with you, when he gets some one-on-one time and attention and loving will settle him down some.
As he matures the chewing will become less, but the digging may still be an issue. If it's just the dogs out in the yard all day it's pretty hard to stop them digging if they want to. But if you exercise him properly, give him daily love and attention and some games etc. to occupy his mind you'll be moving in the right direction.

I think the Labrador is coming out in your dog. They are known for their hole digging expertise. It's a hard habit to stop. Exercise %26 training will help - your dog needs to keep his mind active as well as his body, and at this age, he has LOADS of energy. Contrary to common opinion, greyhounds are not all that energetic generally, but Labradors are, so it's most probably this part of him that's going to demand your time. Don't think that putting a dog in a big yard is enough for him to burn off his energy. Most dogs will not run around on their own when you aren't there. They need motivation, in the form of games or walking/running the dog at the park or around the neighbourhood. He also needs outside stimulation to keep his mind from getting too bored.
One thing I found that can stop a dog digging in an exisiting hole, is to put the dog's droppings into it. They will not dig into it. Place the droppings in with a very thin covering of soil so it's still visible, but only just. This will guard against the dog eating it if he is so inclined.
Good luck with this. It generally passes with age, but for the next year or two you may have to try some different ways of avoiding this. Don't punish him if you find a hole. There's no point unless he's actually digging when you catch him.
Dont keep him outside... During that time dogs usually go through their "teen age" days where they rebel. if thats not the case.. you should keep it inside

What's the earliest age a great pyr's protective and gaurdian instincts start to kick in? puppyhood? Adolesence? adult?? what age??

My girl is an Anatolian Shepherd/Great Pyrenees mix, but both are livestock guardian dogs. As a puppy when things changed suddenly or were not where they always had been previously she would growl at them in their new spot. However, I would say her protective, patrolling, guarding me instincts didn't really come out full force until about 18 months old. That is when she really started the standoffish behavior with people that I had obvious animosity for, when she started guarding me and blocking people from coming near me when I didn't feel well and patrolling the house and "making the rounds" to make sure everything was okay. She may show some instincts as a youngster but I wouldn't expect anything more than a growl until at least 1 year. I would stress that Pyrs CAN become overly aggressive if proper and extensive socialization isn't utilized. Since they would be on the list of banned breeds if we had breed specific legislation, please make sure you socialize your dog enough so that he/she knows what is normal behavior from people and what people are looking for trouble.
They should kick in round puppyhood but some can be a bit late give him or her till about one and half and u should have a good dog!!
as a puppy, my panda bear (border collie/pyrenese) i noticed at twice the size of a cat (cant remember the age), he had the instinct while i was walking him, and he started barking at my brother walking twords me about 70 yards away. it was weird because this cute little puppy had the bark of a 100lb dog.
he is the sweetest dog ever, and is extremly beautiful, but he scares my friends because he always has to sniff them first, and if they are too far away he lets out his killer bark, but he could never hurt a fly.

I have had 3,they cost from $250 to $1500.for a pet grade pup they eat large breed puppy dry for 15months and large breed adult dry food food after They eat 4 to 5 cups a day when growing and you have to go by the dog as an adult.They are fairly low maintenance. they have super fine short hair. They do well in most situations, like in small houses they adapt quickly and are very gracefull. They fear no dogs and few people,are very intelligent ,very loving. They are like a little dog that doesn't know they are large.They only live 9 or 10 years as they grow so much that they are using 8 or 9 yrs in 1 human year. You will never forget these gentle giants once you have had one.
Great Danes aren't as active as some other big dogs, but they still need daily walks (or two) to keep them going strong. Large breeds also eat more than smaller dogs, but if you're feeding a quality dog food, it won't be too bad.
This is a great place to start for anecdotal stories about Danes. I think they're gorgeous, personally. Sadly, I don't have one, but I've spent some time around them and they are generally just beautiful gentle sweethearts.

I got a rescue. He cost me $75. He didn't really eat much more than any other dog. Okay, Maybe alittle. But he was the best dog I've ever had. But something you need to keep in mind. They don't live very long. I had to have mine euthanized at age 10. So I'll never own one again.

These dogs all need help and a lot of times they get puppies too. as for how much a dog cost, that depends on the breeder, I've seen them anywhere from $450-2500!! it all depends

One very important thing..you NEVER, EVER, EVER feed a Dane puppy puppy food of any kind not even large breed..it is way too high in protein levels and in calcium and can cause some very seriosu growth issues, some of which could cripple it for life or cause it to have to be euthanised.
A well bred, well cared for Dane can live into it's teens.

I recommend that you get the book The Great Dane, Model of Nobility by Jill Swedlow..it is a very good book with correct info. It is really the best Dane book out there.

I have had 3,they cost from $250 to $1500.for a pet grade pup they eat large breed puppy dry for 15months and large breed adult dry food food after They eat 4 to 5 cups a day when growing and you have to go by the dog as an adult.They are fairly low maintenance. they have super fine short hair. They do well in most situations, like in small houses they adapt quickly and are very gracefull. They fear no dogs and few people,are very intelligent ,very loving. They are like a little dog that doesn't know they are large.They only live 9 or 10 years as they grow so much that they are using 8 or 9 yrs in 1 human year. You will never forget these gentle giants once you have had one.
Great Danes aren't as active as some other big dogs, but they still need daily walks (or two) to keep them going strong. Large breeds also eat more than smaller dogs, but if you're feeding a quality dog food, it won't be too bad.
This is a great place to start for anecdotal stories about Danes. I think they're gorgeous, personally. Sadly, I don't have one, but I've spent some time around them and they are generally just beautiful gentle sweethearts.

I got a rescue. He cost me $75. He didn't really eat much more than any other dog. Okay, Maybe alittle. But he was the best dog I've ever had. But something you need to keep in mind. They don't live very long. I had to have mine euthanized at age 10. So I'll never own one again.

Great Dane?
I bought a Great Dane to protect my wife just recently. Bono, the Dane has been chasing my Appaloosa horse, and I fear for the Dane. My horse, called aptly The Edge (Off The Edge of Sanity is his registered name) has been trying to kick and trample the dog. Any ideas?

Danes are not guard dogs. They are big silly love bugs who think they are part of the family. The dog is only trying to play with the horse, sounds like you need to get some training. The class pet smart offers taught my year old dane some manners.
Keep the dog out of the horse pen? My Border Collie came very close to being brained by my friends Frisian (sp? some big draft horse) so I made sure to keep him out of the horses way after that.
The dog has to learn the word NO! And have it enforced. Then when they obey you, forgive them with a hug or a pat on the head.
Keep the dog away from the horse. Even though a Dane is a very large dog, it is no match for a horse. Teach the dog to stay out of the pasture; if he doesn't listen, you'll have to take more drastic measures, such as elecric fences.
There's an easy cure for this. Put a sturdy collar on this dog, cut a broom stick about 18" long, attach a piece of chain in the middle of the stick and attach the other end to his collar, letting it hang down to the middle of his leg. When the dog runs, the stick will hit his legs and he'll stop. Works every time. This also is a good solution for jumping fences.
If you don't want to use this method, buy an electronic collar (more expensive). Put it on and time the shock with the unwanted behavior. I can guarantee he will only test this a few times before he will permanently stop.
You can also put the dog in a kennel, or fence the corral so the dog can't get in.
If you let this go on, the horse will eventually kick the dog causing grave consequences.

My husband used to go overseas on business trips and I had no family around. Our girl has not left us disappointed. While our girl did not need to be trained to guard our property, she has needed to learn to squelch other instinctive but undesirable behaviors such as chasing animals we don't want her to.
A remote electric collar is what I highly recommend. Make sure it is a remote collar that issues static by you pushing a button and not just an anti-bark collar. It works very quickly (expect to see some kind of results immediately after following directions) and you need to be consistent with it. It is very humane and your dog will not connect the correction with you.
Danes are lovable,goofy but not very bright. If he sustains a bone injury you are in for a long haul and more chances then none a great loss. They can be stubborn but he needs boundaries,it may take a remote collar to train him. Check out Stubborndog.com They have tons of training equipment and I swear to you it works!

Great Dane/English Mastiff mix puppy?
I'm considering adopting a Great Dane/Mastiff mix puppy at the end of the week. I've been researching different breeds for some time now, and also have personal experience with Great Danes (I used to dog sit for my neighbor's Danes). There is an 8 week old female Dane/Mastiff puppy available, she's small for her breed mix (currently about 12 lbs) but will still likely end up at least 80 lbs. I'd like to hear about others experiences with such a mix, and any tips as far as nutrition (I use Nutro Natural Choice Lamb %26 Rice with my current dog) and anything else that will help! She's not my first large breed dog, and will be joining my 5 month old male Akita (neutered). Thanks!

I agree with the poster who said your pup might exceed 80 lbs. Both breeds usually end up at least twice that usually and even the smallest of a litter IMO would be over 100 in most cases. I have an English Mastiff puppy who is 10 months and over 150 lbs currently and I dont think he is the biggest pup in his group since I watch updates on his litter. Females are smaller but still, just make sure you are prepared for this possibility. I bet she will be lovely though. Those breeds are both wonderful.

Great Dane Potty Training?
I am having a little trouble with Thor. He is an 9 weeks old great dane, and I have had him 3 weeks.
We take him outside quite a bit, at least every two hours when we are home, when we are not home and at night, he stays in his crate.
We praise him like crazy and give him a treat every time he does his business outside. And he never messes in his crate.
He does pretty well with number 1 but it is number 2 that is a problem. For some reason he will not poop outside. No matter how often we take him out, he will pee outside, and then 5 minutes later poop inside. When I see him, I will say "No!" sharply and take him outside right away, and he will still not poop outside, he will hold it until he is inside and I am not looking.
I am out of ideas. I know he is a baby, and it is not his fault. And I know I need to be patient, but I need to see some sort of movement in the right direction so I can use positive reinforcement.

Whenever the dog is in the house and not crated put a body harness and leash on the dog, tie end of leash to your belt. Wherever you go the dog goes. When you see the dog start to signal (sniff/circle/scratch) that it's got to go than run the dog out to where you want it to go. Praise, reward (immediately) and use a command word consistently. When the dog shows it's learned to go outside consistently by dragging you to the outside than you can undo the leash from your belt. Keep the leash on the dog still and keep an eye on it whenever it is in the house and not crated so if it starts to make an accident you can grab the leash and run it outside. Once it is going outside with no attempted accidents for at least a week than you can take the leash off.
The most common mistake in potty training is giving the dog freedom to roam the house without supervision where the human doesn't see the dog signal it needs to go.
Also, if he won't poop (and you know he should be) when outside than walk him back inside and to his crate. Keep him in ther for five minutes than back outside, keep doing this until he does poop.
take her out when you get take then out after they eat and ever couple hours
It's only nine weeks old. It could take up to another 6 weeks before he gets it.
I have a Newfoundland (another big dog). It took awhile to get him to go always outside (about 15 weeks old) My advice is to stay with him outside for up to a half hour at a time, until he finally goes poop outside. Then go over the top in praise. He'll get the idea that he has to go outside.

Great dane or lab mix?
i have a solid black puppy and we got him from the newspaper. the mom was on site and i could tell right away that she was full bred pitbull they also had papers on her. they told us the dad was a pit also and was borrowed for the breeding and was in another state.now that he is about 4 months old we can tell he is not a full pit. but we can't tell if the dad was a lab or a great dane. don't have any pics but is there something i could look for about him that would give me a good idea?

We did our Chihuahuas with "poo-poo-potty" and they now head to the doggy door. We would take turns going out with them to ensure they went. Praise the tar out of them when they do it where they should ,"good boy, poo-poo-potty" but praise or stopping them should be as soon as they are doing it.

Got to find my dog a home?
I have to find somewhere to live, which is renting, my dog at the moment lives with me and my parents, because i am moving in with my boyfriend i was hoping my mum and dad would like to keep him. I will visit every day and have him all day at the weekend. my dad say's no but mum says yes. What should I do who could re home him. He is a sweet Jack Russell. full of fun and mad with it.

You could check and see if there is a JRT rescue in your area. lacking that you could put an ad in the paper and see if anyone is interested. Just make sure that you do ask for a reasonable price for him. Do not give him away. Unfortunately when people get things for free, they seem to have less value to them.
You could also check with your Humane Society. Sometimes they have a wish list of types of dogs that people are looking for.

please, ask your mum to talk your dad round, or, ask your dad for a 6 month trial so you could prove to him that you will walk him every single day and have him at weekends. You can't rehome him just like that - he is part of the family isn't he?
shame on your dad, though maybe he has a valid reason. the poor dog has bonded with you and should be part of the family, it is sad he cannot make a place for him. Do try the Jack Russell Rescue society, they will know people who can give him a permanent home. I am sorry you may have to lose him.

You could check and see if there is a JRT rescue in your area. lacking that you could put an ad in the paper and see if anyone is interested. I'm looking for advice on training, shots, vet visits. We don't want to breed and will get him fixed when it's time.

The first thing you need to teach Bruce is his name. The second thing you need to teach Bruce is to go 'potty' outside, not indoors. The third thing you need to do (when he's older than 12 weeks) is enroll him in a good 'dog training class' with you, so you 'both' will get good training. Call your city's parks department, or ask other people who own dogs (look for the 'very well behaved' dogs, of course).
Oh ... and give Bruce a kiss on the top of his head from me, too, please ... also one from you, of course.
As for his 'shots' you should get the 'soonest available appointment' with a good vet, and have him tell you what shots Bruce will need and when he'll have to have them ... and get him his first 'exam' too ... that way when it's time to have Bruce 'fixed' the vet will 'know him' and will be gentle with him ... Bruce is 'small' but doxies have 'the biggest hearts' and be prepared to 'fall totally in love' with your new little fellow.
lol you are suppose to let the puppy stay with its mother till atleast 8 weeks... Your pup should have his first shots and dewormed... Then when hes like 12 weeks he gets his second shot called a booster... Basicially shots are for to protect him from bacteria all those crap for immune system. Get him neutered is a good idea.
Well make sure you feed them lots of hard food cause it cleans their teeth and also its good if while you feed him you teach him tricks and stuff.

i got a dog for 90 dollar at a shelter place. it was mean and kept bite me no matter what when 4 dogs of my friend like me. so i got new dog and brought it back we had to put blanket over its head and put it in. i got bit. then we took it there and got a new dog. it is big and it is a lab and a retriever. then i take home. it was nice and always licks me. why did the dog hate me but this one like me.

Biting in dogs is a warning. It has nothing to do with hate or dislike.
Any dog can and will bite given the right circumstances.
Your new dog is probably better adjusted than the old dog. Make sure you walk him and train him properly.
Cause sometimes shelters don't evaluate dogs properly and don't take good care when they are putting them into homes.. They sometimes take the attitude that a home is a home, and don't worry about making sure that it's the right dog for the person / situation..
The other dog was probably aggressive. Unless it was a puppy. If it was a puppy you just had to teach it not to bite. But if it was an adult dog, and it was aggressively biting you, there is nothing you could do about it.

It is important to know what type of dog you are getting and if it is a good fit for you. It sound like it is an aggressive dog. Good ways to keep my dog entertained when she's home alone?
My dog is left home alone for about 8-9 1/2 hours (while I'm at school) a day 5 days out of the week. On weekends we go hiking or walking and we try to walk for at least a mile everyday or every other day, so it's not as if she's inactive or anything. Since I will be going back to school, I'm looking for some ways to keep her entertained while she's home alone. So far, a toy that she's like while being left alone is a kong filled with a few treats or peanut butter. Are there any other good toys similar to the kong or any ideas that have worked for you? I'm open to anything. Thanks!

My dog loves little stuffed animals to toss around, we also use the kong filled with peanut butter, maybe hide a few treats around the house for her to sniff out, i hope this helps :)
If you have friends who can, then ask them to go over and let her oustside, and play with her. If not, then have a doggie door that leads to a fenced in yard. Lots of toys, and full water dishes,a dn food, will help her have fun. :)

Send her to doggie daycare where she can play with other dogs. Some people swear by turning on the TV to Animal Planet for the dog. My own real opinion? If the dog isnt being destructive and isnt going to the bathroom on the floor, you are probably OK as-is, and your dog likely sleeps nearly the whole time you are gone anyway.
You can stuff the kong with peanut butter and freeze is overnight so that it takes longer to chew. You can also freeze a bagel to give her something to chew on for a couple of hours. Another good toy is a "Buster Block," which is basically plastic a cube that you fill with kibble or treats, which fall out a few at a time as the cube is turned over and over. Active, focused breeds like pit bulls especially like these.
Also, you can hire a dog walker, or a kid from the neighborhood you know and trust, to come over during the day and take the dog out walk her or play with her for a while. Also more expensive but available is doggy day care, but expect to be put on a waiting list since those services are in high demand.
ok well if yoour going to leve somewhere you can put n a doggie door so it can go outside when ever it wants! um.

If you absolutely can't do that, then make sure to take her for a long walk before you leave in the morning and at night. I just use stuffed kongs, and I make them hard to get anything out. You can put almost anything (healthy for her of course) in there and then freeze it and give it to her in the morning, that should keep her busy for a while. Put the tv on Discovery Channel, my Mom's dog watches tv! I give my dog chewies (all natural) for him to chew on also. Another ball similar to the Kong is a ball with holes in it, not sure what it's called. But you can put a few cookies that are slightly bigger then the holes and she needs to work to get those out too. Just make sure she has lots of toys and once again, consider a doggy door so she can go outside when she wants too. Oh, I also bring my dog to day care, he loves it, and is wore out in the evening, for a change!

You could also use a doggie cologne and simply find a scent you like.
I use dog shampoo that I bought at Target - destination spa I believe is the brand. I like the lavender and vanilla scent - it is supposed to have a calming effect. It does not smell like normal dog shampoo.
Paul MItchell also has a new line of dog shampoo - smells great!
Antibacterial dog shampoo. It helps keep the dog from getting smelly sooner and it smells good, without smelling too strong.
I've always used Johnsons baby shampoo on my bichon frise. He's never had any skin problems.

Many genetic problems that run rampant in breeds are not readily apparent in young mothers and fathers. You could realistically produce very sick puppies, and then it's your responsibility to either spend a LOT of money fixing them, or have them euthanized. Neither option is very fun.
One in four homeless dogs is purebred. Read that statistic again. Then ask yourself why on earth you are breeding your dog. Do we need more purebred dogs with AKC papers to find homes for? Puppies are easy to give away, but once they lose the initial cuteness, they become unpopular. Many die in shelters.
On a similar note, contact a breed rescue representative for the breed of dog you want to "produce," and ask how many purebred, papered dogs they have waiting for homes. The numbers are staggering.
There are ten times as many dogs as there are homes in America. Would you be doing anyone a favor besides yourself?

Some people can be a little harsh because there are so many dogs in the shelters without homes. A lot of people spend a lot of time and a lot of money finding homes for these dogs. I really respect these people and understand their frustration with people who breed without a life-time responsibility for the puppies. It's definitely frustrating to them when people breed their dogs without taking responsibility for the lives they bring into the world. I think kitty143cat covered that very well. Good breeders take responsibility for their puppies for their entire lives. If something happen to the owner, the breeder insists on taking it back and taking responsibility for that life before it goes to a shelter or something. This is the quality of a responsible breeder.

Good non presription flea cure?

Frontline (or Advantage --^). Non-prescription, and works 100%. Use it consistently every 4 weeks for a few months and you will not have a single flea on your pet, in your home, or in your yard.
You can now get Advantage and such non perscription. You can go to a vet, online or even a farm store and they should sell it to you no problem.
You can try salt water bath and combing - picking out the fleas with your hands. Cedar bedding helps - also there are over the counter drops that you can place on their backs that kills and repells fleas. It think it's Hartz Guard.
The best thin to do for any animal to stop fleas or ticks is Garlic.
Go to the store and just buy a bulb. For large animals a clove a day is fine mince it up and put it in the food. Smaller animals will take about a half clove.
Blood Parasites hate garlic and they will not feed on an animal who has garlic in thier blood stream.
This is also a good trick for humans. Granted the animal can and will still be bit by the paprasite but the parasite will not stick around if the host is unacceptable

Whatever you do, please, I repeat, please stay away from any names that end in the "ee" sound. Like, Rosie, Maggie, Sweetie, Garry, Buddy, Shady... they are way overused and unoriginal.
Name him or her something that means something to you or your family. I named my dog Lasher after a book I liked.
I adore unusual names so long as they aren't too weird. Things like Soda-Pop and Ketchup are a little too weird for my tastes... and Oreo is just way overused.

Whatever you do, please, I repeat, please stay away from any names that end in the "ee" sound. Like, Rosie, Maggie, Sweetie, Garry, Buddy, Shady... they are way overused and unoriginal.
Name him or her something that means something to you or your family. I named my dog Lasher after a book I liked.
I adore unusual names so long as they aren't too weird. Things like Soda-Pop and Ketchup are a little too weird for my tastes... and Oreo is just way overused.

Good fairly inexpensive dog food.?
I currently feed my 11wk old boxer pup "Pedigree puppy" b.c that is what the breeder was feeding him and I didnt want to switch.

i feed my dogs pedigree and they do just fine. they all started out on pedigree puppy and when they were a year old, i gradually switched them to adult small bites. one of my dogs is now almost to the point of going on senior food - i have to check and see if there is a pedigree senior. if not then i will leave her on what she is eating now. none of my dogs have ever had a problem on pedigree and they love the taste of it. they also haven't had major teeth problems - i think because of the different shaped kibble
Good dog foods make a huge difference. The difference between pedigree and a high quality food like Canidae, Timberwolf, etc, is like the difference between you eating Mcdonalds everyday vs. organic meat and veggies.
The more expensive foods seem more expensive but in the long run don't cost any more because you feed less because they don't have fillers.

The Goodlife Recipe is an awesome all natural dog food (not organic just chemical free) and wasn't part of the big dog food recall that happened a few months ago, i believe Pedigree was a recalled brand. They have a website you can go to. I get mine from the local Walmart it runs about $12 a bag. I have 4 dogs and it lasts a week. I wouldn't use IAMS they do animal testing!!!
I think you need to reconsider your question. When a food is certified organic it means that not only is it not genetically altered (which isn't really that big a deal to me because peas have gone through the genetic twister), but most importantly, they are pesticide free.
Dogs are much much smaller and weigh a lot less than we do. They also metabolize things very differently than we do. So pump them full of chemicals and you are going to see a higher incidence of liver failure, of cancer, of bone problems, of poor teeth, a sickly coat, more likely to be overweight, and so on.
Good food actually doesn't cost as much as you think. Through PetCo or PetSmart you can become part of the buy 10 bags get one free. Also, with good high quality food that isn't filled with fillers, you feed your dog LESS of it so it lasts longer.
Good high quality food doesn't contain fillers, it doesn't contain meta by-products (think hot dogs for dogs) it doesn't contain wheat or corn (the top two ingredients that dogs are allergic to), and a lot of them are now staying away from soy.
Shop around, you will find that the more up front expensive brands are actually cheaper than you think because you will be feeding your dog a lot less of it. And organic isn't just a snobby word!
Invesitgate your options: read ingredients. Would you eat at McDonald's for every single meal? How about Taco Bell? Why not - because the food would kill you. Poor food will kill your dog also.

if $ is an issue- i think it's better to spend it on proper vet care and training.

When changing food brands you should add it gradually to what you are feeding them now until you are only feeding the new food, otherwise they may get diarrhea. Good luck with you new puppy.
