Good arthritis pain medicine for older dogs?

My dog is probally gonna need it before it gets too cold. Have any suggestions and maybe the price?
Answers:
few options if its arthritis natural remedies in the vets -
condroitin sulfate 4 injections one a week for 4 weeks lasts 6 months.. natural product of the joint fluid therefore cushions the joint instead of pretending there is no pain.
metacam - non steroidal anti inflam - pain relief but bad on the kidneys and guts and only hides pain. used daily oral solution
previcox another non steroidal but doesnt affect the kidneys or gits safer for older dog but daily tablet
glucosamine tablets
flexivet other natural ones.
cod liver oil tablets - the human ones very good for joints.
prescription foods for arthritic dogs - takes month or two to see signs of benefit but dog cant be overweight for it
reduce the dogs weight
i advise a trial treatment of the cartrofen injections 0 first one ive given it to a few animals and the owners say its brilliant

Your dog would probably benifit by getting a glucosamine and condroitin supplement. You can get dog food that has this in it. I feed the Senior Natural Choice "Nutro" it seems to help her a lot. It has the supplements in it. Or you can buy them from your vet or at petsmart. Also a multivitamine would be good. It would be a good thing to give it to your dog year round instead of just winter, so that it is built up in your pups system all the time. It couldn't hurt. Good luck!
When the time comes, the vet will check out your dog and be able to prescribe the proper medication depending on the findings of the physical. If you're concerned, bring the dog in for a physical now so that you can find out if you'll need to be on medication for the winter.
All the other things suggested are good.
One thing that I wish you would research on the net, while you have some time, is Boswellia.
It is an herbal pain med for arthrtis. This would be a lot easier on the dog than prescription meds.
Boswellia is for humans and dogs. I know that it works, my husband takes it for his arthritis.
In Australia you can buy a product called Sasha's Blend for arthritis. I think it is basically powdered shark cartilage. It is supposed to help.
My old dog, from about the age of 13, received a monthly shot at the vet. This was really helpful in helping reduce her pain and stiffness. It helped to repair cartilage and reduce inflammation in her joints. I can't remember the name but your vet will be able to help you. They only ever charged for the shot not the consult as I was there every month - about A$17.
Hope this helps ...
an aspirin and some glucosimine will help, one a day
We had a JRT with hip problems. The vet prescribed Rimadyl (sp?). This seemed to help take the edge off. This was a little pricey - a daily dose. You may try one of the many joint supplements in the pet stores or even some foods with these supplements built in before you resort to this.
