My friend's little toy dog went into labour around 7:00am had gave birth to one healthy little dog. When she was leaving her dog still looked uptight and in pain but then mintues later her dog was fine and started taking care of her baby. Then When my friend got home from school their was another puppy their. Her housekeeper said her dog(princess) just gave brith to the other dog 30 mins ago. So when my friend told me this i was thinking so your dog was in labour for like 9 hours and you didn't even notice?
Can anyone explain that? Or is the housekeeper just screwing with everyone?

It is true that an animal can be in labor with no one noticing it's called silence labor! It is a more painful labor that usually produces a more unhealthy puppy but his housekeeper is almost definitely not joking or kidding around!
actually that does happen often enough.the dog staying in labor that long...expecially a small dog.

No that is not uncommon with smaller dogs to have puppies like that spaced out apart.
Why would the housekeeper lie? I'm surprised she didn't take her dog to the vet to have the puppies. I thought toy dogs have a hard time giving birth. Why wasn't her dog spayed anyway? Is she breeding her?
No it can happen. The mom just takes a very long break between pups. That's why you should always have your dog checked soon after whelping. She's very lucky the pup was a live birth.
It can easily happen... They don't just pop them out at exact intervals til they are done.. You can have a pup an hour for a few hours then nothing for 2 or 3 hours.. If they aren't panting hard, or distressed, they are fine.. They'll take time between pups to clean and feed, and take a nap even.. If she was panting hard and in obvious distress then I would say yeah it's a problem.. It happens..
It is possible , not all dog deliver right away do do stay in labor for couple of hours . Most people do take off when the dog is heaving puppies just so that they can watch and see what's going on and make sure that the mom is taking good care of the puppies .
As a survival mechanism, dogs (and most animals) experience "silent pain." It may be "silent" but it's full-on pain nonetheless.
Among these "silent pains" are labor contractions, dental pain, and a myriad of other pains that would cause any human to cry in agony.
So yes, I can believe your friend's dog was in labor for 9 hours and she didn't notice
it's possible. dogs dont usually give birth to the other dog right after the first one is born. there might have been something stuck it her birth canal which might be why she looked uptight, but then she got comfortable and took care of the second one. if your friend feels the dogs for other puppies and there are none there. either that or she just took a long time and your friend didnt know because dogs can turn off their emotion so it's hard to tell if she's in pain or not. i think she's fine and just had to do a little extra work. but she should really have been checked after the first one was born to see if there were any more puppies. just feel her abdomen for any more that might still be in there. and get her spayed next time. hope she's ok ;)
dogs are very proctive. even if they are in pain.. so 1 new born can trigger a dog into forgetting everything and taking care of it.
This is completely normal. My dad breeds and sells hunting dogs, and I've witnessed this type of thing on many occassions. I've even seen dogs have what seems like a full litter (4-6 pups) and then discover they've had a few more several hours (even overnight) later. Because the dog is a toy, I expect they have much smaller litters. One pup is unusual though...two might be all...but she might even have one more! Good luck to your friend and her new puppies!
